Finding Bluesbucker-sized magnets?
« on: October 30, 2017, 10:50:03 AM »
I’ve been enjoying the new bluesbucker in the bridge of my Strandberg - To the point of ordering another for the neck.

What’s spurred me to abandon my typical PAF-type preference for the BB has been an effort to achieve a pickup tone reminiscent of my Variax’s model of an Epi Casino’s P90s.

My sole issue with the Bluesbucker, though, is the ceramic magnets. The pickup’s design utilizes two narrow bar magnets (at a glance, they seem narrower than pickup spacers) on each side of the “active” screw coil. Ostensibly, ceramic is used because alnico was judged to be too weak in this split arrangement. Google brings up a years-old thread of a guy replacing these with similarly-sized alnico 5s, but no further info.

My question to the community is where I can track down some alnico bars that will fit - The mini-humbucker bars I see on eBay and mojotone seem too wide. What may work best is if I can find a seller of the bars import single coil-makers often mount on the baseplate.

Any ideas? I can live with the Dimarzio design, but can’t resist the temptation to tinker, if it can be done without terrible fuss.
