Music Man Axis Pickups
« on: August 15, 2017, 05:36:11 PM »
Hello

I own two Music Man Axis guitars (Floyd version) and they came with custom DiMarzio pickups.

Does anybody know which DiMarzio pickups (that you can buy online from DiMarzio) come closest in tone to the custom DiMarzio pickups in the Music Man Axis?

Thanks for your time.

This has been a subject of contention since the early 90's, but I recall a half-aired Tone Zone being touted as the most similar to the bridge pup, with others claiming that their de-aired AT-1 sounded subjectively "close", even though the Axis bridge doesn't use Airbucker or Virtual Vintage specs.

Someone else will have to weigh in on a neck comparison.

DiMarzio says there is nothing like it available.

But... the closest they suggest seems to lean toward the TZ bridge and the AN neck. There is word that they have also suggested the AT1 bridge.

I have this Axis set and the AT1. I'm not hearing it, but that's just me.

Thanks for letting me know. I'd like to drop in a pair of similar-sounding DiMarzio pickups into my Wolfgang (import model). The stock pickups are pretty decent, but they're nothing compared to those custom DiMarzios  8)

just remember that there's nothing "identical" and the options are only "similar".  plus you're putting it into a different guitar.

if you are patient and keep your eyes open, you can find a pre-owned set of the Axis/EVH DiMarzios from time to time.  be sure to remember that EBMM uses those same pickups in the Albert Lee H/H guitar and I believe the AX40.  still, you'd be putting them in a different guitar.

Yes, I'll keep my eyes open for a spare set of those custom DiMarzio pickups  :)

Also, is there a DiMarzio pickup that's similar to a Semour Duncan JB pickup?

No.

It sounds like it might be worth the effort to just dive in to a few models and get a better idea for what's what. That's pretty much what most people do.
