Depends on what tone you want to achieve. I would certainly not consider the Transitions if the goal was to be as vintage as possible but everything else is fair game.

I tried a set in a 76 custom with maple neck/fretboard and hated them, could not get them to sound good no matter what I did, I replaced pots 500k and caps, neck was mud just very dark, bridge sounded better in split mode vs HB, mine have gold covers though maybe that made a difference, I replaced them with duncan WLH set and perfection.

I swapped them into an ash HH strat and much better but still kinda dark even with a treble bleed, they sound better set real low and screw poles raised on the higher strings, they sound great when Luke plays them, not my fav dmz pickups even a super 3 sounds more lively. I will be selling them.

I tried them in the music man Luke III HH and only liked them in  positions 2 and 4. Otherwise, they were too dark.

Guys, what do you expect? The Transitions are designed to work with strat-type guitars, 009 strings and bright Bogner amps.

At least you should try taking those muddy covers off.

Unless they are crappy brass covers it should not make much difference, I have a set of 36th's with covers and they sound great, I have a set of 36th's uncovered which I haven't compared them to. As I remember Luke played EMG's until this set evolved, frankly I hate EMG's to me a one trick pony, I had a set in a prs torero and I swapped them with duncan P-Rails and triple shots, with the EMG's the neck was unusable, now it can sound stratty and I get all the gain I had before but with much more clarity and warmth. My particular Les paul was really hard to find pups that sounded good, I would say DMZ offerings go with the 36th set or if you can find some..........(I bought most of whats left) the virtual hot PAF and virtual paf.  The Duncan "whole lotta humbucker" set is awesome, it really took me a while to buy them because I am not a Zep freak but they sound killer and neck and bridge together match perfectly in mid pos. I can do anything from blues to metal. I would say the 36th set would be very similar. Also in a dark Les Paul the pearly gates plus (made for strats) actually sounds really good in the bridge paired with a 59 reverse polarity in the neck, it can make your Les Paul sound stratty in the middle pos.

I don't like active pickups either, but interestingly enough, Luke had a much better guitar sound with EMG than with DiMarzio. His EMG-sound is juicier and more alive. Now with the Transitions he sounds dry, stiff and sizzly. Some people seem to like it, but it's not my cup of tea.
