Need a little help choosing a new pickup
« on: September 10, 2016, 02:35:50 PM »
I wanted to ask your opinion on what a good set pickups would be for my guitar and style. I play an Ibanez ar220 and my style is blues, progressive, and stoner rock. I currently don't own an amp due to harsh financial times, but I am playing through guitar rig 5 on my computer. I know it's not ideal, but it works. My problem with the pickups is that they sound great for cleans and jazzy bluesy sruff, but they don't have a good amount of clarity, definition or drive once I kick the gain on. I want something that keeps the cleanliness but isn't afraid to get a little raunchy and retain the definition heard in the cleans.

I think the 36th Anniversary PAFs would work great. They do pretty much everything.
Another option could be a Humbucker From Hell or Bluesbucker in the neck and a PAF Master in the bridge. Options are endless.

so, basically no more than a medium output bucker in the bridge, at least for dimarzio pickups?

Well, if you do a lot of clean stuff then I wouldnt go for a high output pickup, I'd stay in the low/medium output range. If cleans are not super important then you have a whole lot more to choose from, but the 36's are great "do it all" pickups.

You say blues, progressive (rock? Metal?) and stoner. I wouldn't choose the same pickup for blues and stoner if I had a choice. For stoner I'm thinking "wall of sound", a very full, fat, distorted tone. I'd go something like a Tone Zone or Super Distortion. For blues, probably the 36's or Air Classics.

Just curious, how versatile is the Titan pickup set?

Not sure. Not many people seem to have tried them yet.
