Help choosing new pickups
« on: August 19, 2016, 10:26:42 PM »
Got an '89 Ibanez RG550 with a rosewood fretboard that needs pickups. Have 1 with EVO's & another with super distortions. Like both. Mainly into 80-90's shred guitar stuff Paul Gilbert, Vai, Vinny Moore etc... Was thinking about EVO2 or PAF master & Area '67 in the middle but would appreciate any help. Using a ADA MP-1 & a Marshal DSL.

PAF Pro set

Pick an Area model that you think would fit well

I'd also go with a pair of PAF Pros, or you could go for an early Gilbert tone: Duncan Distortion in the bridge and a Duncan Mini humbucker in the neck.

Sure, he's used all of those as well as Air Classics, PAF Masters and probably others too, but in 87-88 his pink Racer X Ibanez (based on the Epiphone Wilshire) as well as the purple "Telesavalas" Ibanez in the first Intense Rock video had a Duncan Distortion in the bridge (wired in parallel) and a Duncan Vintage Mini Humbucker in the neck.

I have two. One is set up with Tone Zone/Cruiser/Paf Pro, the other with a Fred/Area67/Humbucker From Hell. I love them both for different reasons. I had the Breed set in a another one with a True Velvet middle, but I never meshed with those.

Yea I thought about PAF Pro's cause they were what everyone used back then but it seems none of them use them any more so wasn't sure if there was maybe better choices. Never hear a PAF master so was curious if it was maybe an "improved" version. Thanks for the help.
