PAF Master Pickup Height
« on: June 04, 2016, 05:14:29 PM »
My son has a 2016 Les Paul Traditional.  I put some PAF Master's in it and have a question regarding height.  What is a good starting point for height between the high and low  E strings and the poles when I am pressing the string down on the last fret.....

Thanks

I think the DiMarzio site has some suggested specs that might be a good starting point.

For myself, I usually start with 3/32" on the low E and 1/32" on the high E. That is with the respective string fretted at the last fret. I'll start with all pickups with that spec.

After playing a bit, I'll generally adjust any adjustable pole pieces to follow the radius across the strings. Then listen and adjust or un-adjust as preferred.

Thank you all.... I appreciate the feedback.  I enjoyed the video but you have to be careful.... measurements on the index cards are different than what the commentator says....He has a few of the measurements backwards when he is speaking during the video...

Starting Spec is always a good idea.  But don't lose your mind about spec.

At the end of the day, pickup height, pole height, and the guitar/amp tone all get involved.  It's by your ears in the end.  No two pups are gonna sound the same.

I will say too close to the strings is a tone killer.  Sucks the sustain right out.  And for hotter pups, sometimes a little lower is actually better! (Just a littleā€¦)
