DiMarzio PAF Pro in the neck of a LP-type mahogany guitar?
« on: October 29, 2021, 05:22:31 PM »
Hi guys!

I would like to know your opinions about using a DiMarzio PAF Pro in the neck of a LP - shape mahogany guitar that I recently bought.
The kind of music that I'm going to play with that guitar goes from "Vintage blues" to "modern hard rock with some distortion/overdrive", so I need a versatile humbucker that also sounds well when playing with distortion and/or overdrive.

Would the PAF Pro be a good option?

If so, what bridge DM humbucker will match with that PAF Pro in the neck in that kind of guitar and music styles?

Thanks!

The Paf Pro is a little muddy and bloated in a Les Paul Neck in my opinion. Low notes can get really mushy. If I were after the tones you described, I would go for the 36th Anniversary Neck. I would also throw in a 36th Bridge to round off the package....

If I was dead set on using the Paf Pro in the neck, I would probably go for a Super Distortion in the bridge.

hmm... the thing is... I already have a 36th in a different guitar, so I could change that pickup to the LP...

What do you think about that combo (36th in the neck and PAF Pro in the bridge) in a mahogany LP for that kind of music styles???

That might work. The PAF Pro is probably pretty close to the 36th Bridge in output.

I use to love the Paf Pro but find it kinda thin these days. Maybe I'm just getting old. On a mahogany bodied LP type guitar, I absolutely LOVE the Air Norton/Norton combo.

The norton is really nice in LP types.  So is the 36th neck.

I'd go with this combo

If I was dead set on using the Paf Pro in the neck, I would probably go for a Super Distortion in the bridge.

I second that.

Most neck humbuckers are too muddy in the lows for my ears, even though I like the Bluesbucker and the Seymour Duncan Full Shred neck in the guitars I have them in. Never had a PAF Pro in the neck anywhere (only as a bridge pickup in a HSS guitar). But if you choose it for the neck I agree with the Super Distortion suggestion for the bridge.

Well... I put a Tonerider Generator in the bridge and e PAF Pro in the neck:

A brief test I made:

https://soundcloud.com/user-322226365/dimarzio-paf-pro-tonerider-generator-test

1) DiMarzio PAF Pro (neck)
2)Tonerider Generator (bridge)
3) Both humbuckers together
4) DiMarzio PAF Pro (neck)
5) Tonerider Generator (bridge)

BTW: I'm loving de "3" tone (both pickups combo)!
