help me ID a pickup - maybe Dimarzio?
« on: November 21, 2011, 03:47:39 PM »
A few weeks ago, I picked up a 1994 Korean Squier Strat serial number NK4XXX - when I peeked inside, I found the neck and brdige pickups were not stock.
I was able to get an ID on the neck that I think is correct (Seymour Duncan STK-S1 stacked four wire)

Not having any luck with the middle - it might be a Dimarzio (that's on the pup cover) but their tech support can't say for sure without having me send it to them - not gonna happen!

They said it might be a "an old version of a vintage Strat pickup called VS-1"
I think the VS-1 was also known as a DP-108.

The DC resistance is about 5.5K ohms

Some picures are here:

Anyone ever seen an old Dimarzio like this and have any clues?

How about measuring its DCR? That would help a lot.

Assuming DCR is DC resistance - it's about 5.5K ohms between white and black leads (disconnected from the guitar)
Measured with an old analog VOM so that's as accurate as I can provide.

These pickups are in a guitar I bought used for $45.....

Thanks - that ad photo and another one on ebay doesn't rule out it being a VS-1.
Wish I could find a picture somewhere with the cover off....

Hi. Im also trying to Identify the Vs-1. Very sketchy info. On the web..almost no existent and not definitive. I have a pickup that looks the same as the guys here, thats supposed to be an old Dimarzio single coil..hoping its a Vs-1. Mine is also 5.5K.
The only pic I could find of one, the tooling looks different. Could a pickup have different tooling holes or whatever you call them?

Here is the Vs-1 made for Caparison by Dimarzio ;

Now THESE are supposed to be Pickups that Tokai used on some of their 80's Strats.

Note the different tooling holes;

The Norton won't tame anything.  A fantastic pickup, it will make your LP sound like a wild mongoose who is piloting a F-22 raptor and smoking crystal meth

Hi @Hudsonnh ,your pickups are indeed Di Marzio VS1s.The very same as were fitted to some Tokai goldstar ST 80s .Some were fitted with a small paper sticker stamped PAF(heaven knows why!) they are fantastic sounding pickups.Here is a You Tube link to  link to a Goldstar ST80 swith VS 1s .The Caparison VS1s were not made by Di Marzio,they made all their own pickups and as the name was not copyrighted I assume they used it for their VS1 pickup.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4ZJ00vV2eo
