Area.  Easy.  HS-2s do not sound like real singles and the output is anemic; it's early 80s technology vs. current millennia. 

Also, no need to wire Areas to split, unless you have another pickup that is RW/RP and need to cancel hum (like splitting a bridge humbucker).  All you do when you split an Area is add noise.

I assume Ray is talking about HS-2 in humbucking mode. As a single coil, it sounds beautiful. Crisp and chimey. Plenty of power, reads 8:00 DC resistance. Hum from mine is not an issue.
I love the fact they're old technology. You can by 2nd hand ones dirt cheap on Ebay.
