Hi guys, it's been a while.

Recently scored a mint MIA Ritchie Sambora '95 strat... after some setting up the tremolo, I fired the thing up.. what's the deal with the bridge pickup? I have a regular PAF Pro in a Jackson Dinky, coupled with 36th anny in the neck, and I find the sound a bit different. I found Sambora to be slightly thicker and darker... are my old ears tricking me or is there a difference between the Sambora's PAF Pro and the regular version?

I took the ohm reading on the cable (didn't open the guitar/unscrew the pickguard yet) and it reads out 8.76 so definitely a PAF Pro range. Any input?

Well, the good peeps from DiMarzio tech responded back... the differences in design are adjustable+slug polepieces on Sambora vs hex on normal one. It turns out I have slightly overwound one in the bridge. Taking a reading directly on the pickup by pulling it out of guitar (since another DMZ will find it's home there) yields 8.81kohm reading now, and that's clearly overwound Paf Pro. Different polepieces do give a more solid, thicker sound as well, this has been confirmed by tech support too, so my ears haven't been lying to me. I actually prefer Paf Pro in this 'variant' then stock.

Shame there hasn't been anyone else responding. It's sad to see these forums are almost deserted, compared to the Duncan forums which are thriving.

So your PAF Pro is... overwound and with different pole pieces? I wonder if that would actually make it a very underwound Tone Zone, LOL

Heya,

It's a bit overwound but "still within PAF Pro range" according to DMZ tech guys, and stock it has normal polepieces (a row of slugs and a row of adjustable ones, just like, say, Norton) as opposed to the hex ones which do make a tighter sound.

Hmm, maybe the analogy is correct, it sounds darker then the regular PAF Pro, and it's definitely not the guitar, it's alder with a floyd loaded with thin strings, it's no where near as powerful as TZ, though, and not really as middy. I actually like it better then the other PAF Pros I tried.
