A little Wiring Help
« on: May 26, 2015, 11:18:24 AM »
So I wired up some Dimarzio pickups this weekend. I'm using 2 Cruiser's and an AT-1 basically making a Fat Strat.

After reading several comments and talking to a few people on here through private messages most people seem to be recommending running the 4th position (or 2nd depending on how you look at it) Bridge (Parallel) + Middle rather than splitting the bridge so that you can still get noise cancelling. I've never tried this so I figured I would try it. So, I found this diagram on Dimarzio's Website.

http://www.dimarzio.com/sites/default/files/diagrams/1h2vv_btone_bparallel.pdf

I tried it and it sounds like total crap in that Bridge (Parallel) + Middle position.  Like 1/4 of the volume of all the other pickups.

I started reading the instructions that came with the pickups and what the wire colors are connected to and it seems like this diagram is completely wrong.

The sheet says for Parallel (Position 4)...Red and White are tied together and are Hot to the volume Black, Green and the Plain Wire or Drain wire are all Grounded

In Standard Humbucking Series Wiring Position 5 by itself, it needs to be wired as such....

Black And White are shorted or tied together Red is Hot to the Volume and tone controls Green and the Drain wire are grounded

I have color coded what is happening on the switch in each if the 5 positions. On the left side of the Super Switch the Red and White wires are tied together in position 4, while taking the Black wire to ground and joining White and Red to position 4 on the right side of the switch...plus the middle pickup.

In position 5 on the left, the Black and White wires are being tied together with the switch jumper and the Red wire is hot to position 5 on the right side of the switch. The Green and Drain are already grounded.

Does anyone think that seems right and that the other was wrong? Do you think this would sound good, etc?

Here is how I see the new wiring going by the instructions included with the pickups.

Well, I tried it and everything works great now.  If anybody is trying to wire up a HSS Strat with hum cancelling pickups I would recommend this wiring.  Works great!  Here's my final diagram:
