Everyone is a professional pickup winder these days
« on: March 08, 2020, 12:35:18 AM »
It’s funny that FleaBay has so many independent expert pickup winders of vintage replica pickups.  From Russia, Croatia to Texas.  I don’t see any value from buying from amateur do-it-yourselfers, over experienced manufacturers.  False sense of tone upgrade.

independent experts are how the "current" big hitters started.  the key point is "amateur".

one guy that I saw had started advertising literally as he got the materials and was still in testing and prototype phases.  there is a LOT more to it than simply knowing what gauge of wire and what magnet and what DCR to wind to.  specs are interesting to keep tabs on, but when I see people obsessing over a magnet type or a DCR, I'm likely to tune them out.

This is popular in my country.
Some of them are good, some of them are cr4p. ;)
Some of them are in range of Mighty Might Indonesian cr4p.
Some of them are like Lollar / Fralin. ;)

We have like guy, who makes Fender Texas Special looks like cr4p.
We also have a guy who makes amazing PAFs in range of Lollar / Fralin ....

On the other side, we have guy who wants like 150$ for pickup rewind.
And makes your pickups sound like sh1t. XD

Luckily we have like, local community with names, and bunch of people who tried them.
So we have evidention of good onces and cr4p onces. ;)

Edit:

Same trend with guitars.
We have like guys who make instruments in range of like USA PRS guitar.
And we have guys who make like instruments in range of cheapest Squiers , and they want 1500$ for it. xD
We also have names of good onces and cr4p onces. XD

So I should probably ask what country you are in. I'm sure many of us would be interested in checking out some of these great pickups.

One of which was mentioned in 1st post. ;)

I don't know how long you in USA wait for pickups.

But in my country, when we order DiMarzio in local shop.
We need to wait for like 10 freakin months to get in shop.
10 months. -.-

That is how that all trend started. ;)

I'm more on guitar side. ;)
I did try instruments from 2 guys, which I think they are super good.
They cost like Gibson USA Les Paul Studio Fadded, but they are way better instruments in terms of quality.
I'm not soo much into like pickups clones, cause I can find myself in Duncan / DiMarzio so I don't feel need to go to them.
But I've heard really a bunch of great stuff about 2 of them.
I have some "gear friends" which did try some of them, and they are extremely picky in gear.
And I know them in real life, so I guess they didn't lie.
Again, I stand behind 2 guitar guys, which instruments I did try.
But pickups, I know few people in real life who tried in, didn't say anything bad about it.
They were actually pretty impressed.
I know few guys who did swamp like Texas Specials for one of this guys pickups, they were pretty pretty impressed.
On the other side, one of PAFs guy, I've never heard a bad word about him so .....
On the third side, I've heard that some of them will kinda .... you know .....
Depends on guy.
But I strongly suggest, strongly really.
Stick to usual names. ;)
If you are not like happy with DiMarzio / Duncan.
Get Fralin / Lollar / Bare Knuckle.

Edit:

Unless ofc, you are son of Bill Gates, and you have tons of money to waste on "stupid things".

Like anywhere in world, we are mixed.
There are people who do their job honestly and without need of scamming people.
And then we have those who do bullsh1t. ;)
There will always be this 2 types of people, where-ever you go. ;)

But I can say few things.
We have like, good collages, they are super hard to get diploma on.
We have like, high unemployment rate, like right behind Spain.
So people, either like, go outside to world, or stay and open home work.
We have those who work honestly without cr4p, and those who do sh1t.

And in terms of like music gear, we don't have like , 5 guns in house live avarage family in USA. xD
Only police here have guns. xD
So when we need something, we like, find people who have it in local 2nd hand market place.
And they like, gave us time to show stuff.
Tons of times I was in situation what I was interested in some stuff, and I didn't want to buy them on blind.
And there were tons of people with messages like; " My friend has XXX part of music gear, I can message him and tell him to show that piece of gear to you. ".
I was tons of time in situation like that, were people from local music community did let me in their house, and show me pedals / amps / guitars .....
In my country, cases where someone would take a gun, and like kill half of country is extremely rare. 1 case in like 100 years so ....
Lastly I did wanted to try one guitar model, and one pickup, few of very kind people did show me that piece of gear.
Same goes for like this pickups replicas .... If I wanted, I could try all of them in next 15 minutes. XD (Okey, not in 15 min, but in next few days - but you get the point).

The problem with that replica stuff is simple.
Like anywhere else, some of them are good, some of them are bad.
But they have no name. And if you want to sell them, you need to put them in like 1/10th of price, and you still won't sell them.

Some of custom made guitars are like on market for like 2 years straight .....

I agree Dark P.  The savings is marginal with the amateur pickups.  The majority of them have no sound demos and who knows if they are rebranded pickups from oversees.

I just bought a set of Rose pickups for $85 (Robusta neck/middle and Buff Beauty bridge).  Boutique winder, very satisfied, they are 100% what I was looking for.  As good as my Seymour Duncan (if not better) and made to my specs (flat poles, 9.5" radius).
Not much on Youtube, but good comments in some forums.
In Montreal (Canada) there's nothing in stores, so it's special order without 21 days exchange policy and no returns, plus 8-12 weeks waiting.
Better spend $85 to try something than $250-$300.

Congratulations, glad things worked out!  There is no re-sale value in this stuff, looks like he got it right the first time.
