Air a Norton or unair an Air Norton?
« on: August 01, 2018, 10:14:47 AM »
I'm looking to try out a Norton or Air Norton but in order to keep my options open I was wondering if it would be easier to air a Norton or unair an Air Norton? I know about the half-air mod and while I might end up doing that as well I'm focused on the two extremes.

From taking apart air-'buckers and owning/fiddling with a Norton myself, airing the Norton would be simpler.  That way you already have keeper bars to put back in if you don't like the 'aired' sound.

As I recall, to truly air a humbucker one needs shorter slugs or shorter screws, correct? Not saying these can't be had but worth knowing for sure.

Not that I've seen.  It's literally just putting a gap (albeit a very small one) between the magnet and the pole pieces.  Dimarzio uses little plastic rings around four of the pole pieces to maintain said gap.

My vote is to try a Norton and, if you find yourself wanting a lower-voltage version, you can half- or fully-Air it.

I'm a bit late but I'd totally go with the Norton first and see how it goes.

Thanks for all the replies folks. Now I just need to pick the right guitar to try it in. :)

I think I'll go with my camo Charvel that has a Tone Zone and Chopper in it.

I'm not in love with the Tone Zone anymore and like the Satch Track more than the Chopper.
