Gear Closet / Plate Bypass Cap for EVH 5150 III
« on: May 10, 2018, 01:26:39 PM »
Hello All!

Looking to add a Plate bypass Cap to the last gain stage and possibly the last two of the Red channel of EVH 5150III to cut back the high end fizzle. Any suggestions on values? Seems like BE-100 uses 500pf caps, Dual Rec uses 220pf, and SLO 100 uses 1000pf. Any suggestions? also if let me know if I should consider doing this to other gain stages instead of V3 or V4.

Schematic Attached.

Thanks,

Hello all,

Currently have a Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 Pro Flat strat in my Neck and Middle spots of an alder strat.

https://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/alnico-ii-pro-flat-strat?__uuid_ref=5ad78cf1256ae

I like the tone but would like hum canceling. Not to mention I have been blown away by everything that I have switched from Duncan to Dimarzio so purging all SD from my household.

That being said. Any recommendations for replacing the tone of those two while keeping the Hum canceling? I usually like Warmer rather than chimier but still like a strat bell tone if that makes since.

Based off of sound samples I would say dominion fits your Description pretty well. I havent tried the super D but currently have the Super 3 which sounds good but its got more of a general mid bump rather than the High mid spike that youd find in EMG 81's. I would imagine the Super D would be even more balanced than the Super 3. All that to say from the sound samples that I have heard Dominion sounds closest to having the High Mid Spike you need.

So in case yall were wonderin,  the sound in my head probably wasn't a PAF but instead was definitely a Super 3. At least in this guitar sounds amazing. I feel like everytime someone thinks they need a Duncan JB in their guitar they're actually hearing a Super 3 or Super D in their head. Only Pickup that I have that I didnt feel the need to Mod with a magnet swap or polepieces or anything like that. Only trick now is to find a neck pickup that can keep up with the volume. Any suggestions for that? currently have an Airzone in the neck that Im thinking of converting to a tone zone and popping in an alnico 8.

SO as isn’t the usual case with online forums is I have a sound in mind but done know how to describe what I am looking for.

I got an Illuminator bridge based off of reviews. And they are very balanced and have a lot of presence just like the DiMarzio website. It is a lot clearer than the air zone but not nearly as thick. So I tweaked everything until I got a sound that I liked. What I ended up with was bass and treble on the amp at midnight mids all the way up, a diamond comp at 70%compression going into a tube screamer boosting the amp and my tone knob at half. So just ungodly amounts of compression and mids. So now I’m thinking super 3 for the mids and compression to give me that sound in my head. Kept thinking it’s a tighter low end when it’s compression and mids that I was looking for. I just was worried about the nasal peak I got with a SD JB. Hoping Super 3 will have the compression and mids that’s I haven in mind while less bass to give more clarity and thump than airzone. Thoughts?

I do it before the switch so not sure how that effects the resistance but It still lets quite a bit of high end through the way I do it. But your probably right though.

So may not be the most helpful but Anything in the Seymour Duncan Custom Line is not tight at all. I dont know where people here the tightness in those pickups. For the most part Dimarzios (other than PAF reproductions) will be tighter than most others as Dimarzio uses shorter screw poles. Usually double hex screws will produce a tighter sound (although that is not a universal rule just in most cases). I can personally vouch for the Seymour Duncan Omega and would Imagine the Titan would be the same way as periphery is a very rhythmic band.

However, In My experience, Pickups will only do so much. Most times tightness comes from the amp and pedals and its up to the pickups not to mess it up. I traded a PRS Archon for an EVH 5153 for this exact reason. Orange is usually pretty loose so you might be happier with a tube screamer or a Klon clone with the gain turned down. Horizon devices precision drive, and Catalin Bread Naga Viper will do the same thing.

The Pickup Place / Re: PRS - Illuminator Wiring Help

So there are two ways of doing this....

a true coil SPLIT - completely takes one of the coils out of the signal all together - This is done by Sending the Series coil link (for Dimarzio pickups it would be Black and white wires) to ground. this often will result in a volume drop and a brighter tone.

a coil TAP - is done also by sending the series link to a resistor (PRS uses a 1k for the bridge and a 2.2k for the neck pickups) and then to Ground. What this does is it does not completely ground the Series link and thus will let some of the other coil into the signal. This theoretically will keep the volume from dropping as much but also may yield a fuller sound closer to what you would expect from a single coil in that spot.

In my experience the difference is subtle but its definitly there. Ill let you decide if you like it better one way or not.

what this looks like in a push pull situation.... Wire the Series link (black and white wires together) to the middle slug of the switch, one pickup on each side. From there take the bottom slug of the switch and wire that to your ground for a true coil split. For a coil tap use a resistor to ground instead of a wire.

Best of luck.

So I have always used 500k Pots in both my spots. However I use resistors to get different pot values for each pickup. through my use of resistors I have my neck value with a value of 250k and my bridge at 333k both going into the same 500k volume pot. So if youre using a 1M volume pot you have more options.

I have heard that alot of vintage gibson pots were actually higher than 500k. So if you have 1M Pots through a combo of resistors you have more options available to you for experimenting with Pot values.

I play through an EVH 5150 III 50W head and 2x12 EVH cab, Stock Celestion speakers. Use Line 6 Helix for effects and minor modeling if that plays into it at all.

Sure, I just mentioned that for reference. I’m my experience magnets only slightly change the sound so I’m just asking which has character on its own without a magnet swap.

Hello all, Skip all caps for condensed version if you dont Need the full story and/or dont like reading.

Looking for recomendations for a bridge pickup! Finally switched from being a long time seymour duncan user converted to Dimarzio!

Currently have an Airzone with an alnico 4 in the bridge of my warmoth Mahogany/Maple top warmoth Strat. For the most part I am some what satisfied with the tone that I get. Although it seems like theres a High Mid bump with the Airzone that Im not a fan of.  I think that may be due to the Dual resonance tech. Also not a fan of the harmonics and compression as my amp compresses enough.

I had a Pearly Gates with an Alnico 4 for a while in the bridge and liked that and was drawn to the Air zone hearing it was like a super powered PAF. While I like it for the warmth, it now is muddy and not so clear.  The tricky part is this guitar is hard to figure out. its bright and warm at the same time hard to say. But basically anything thats already High mid prominent will sound not so awesome in this guitar.

Im wondering if theres a better alternative for a PAF eq/vibe while having hard hitting palm mutes through my EVH 5153 but with a softer high end like a vintage Pickup. plays softer as well for Blues and Worship.

Needless to say I love Alnico 4's as you can see. So I will probably be swapping out whatever magnet for an A4.

NEED BRIDGE PICKUP FOR MAHOGANY/MAPLE TOP STRAT - PAF SOUNDING/VIBE WITH WARM HIGHS AND TIGHT LOWS FOR PALM MUTES THROUGH HIGH GAIN, WILL SWITCH MAGNET TO A4 FOR PERSONAL PREFERENCE.

Thinking of...

PAF 36th worried about low end not being tight enough
PAF Pro worried about being too bright and not being quite loud enough
PAF master for the A4 but worried about it being to stringy or thin and bright
Titan - Current favorite as it seems balanced and seems to be close ish to the Balanced tone looking for but cant really tell as all the tone samples Ive heard are super DJenty and hard to tell what it actually sounds like.
Super 3 - worried about it being too loud
Super D - same as super 3.

Thoughts? Thanks Guys!
