I've also been told I should check out the Air Classic as well.

The Pickup Place / Air Zone and question about pickup combinations
« on: January 28, 2016, 08:10:34 PM »
Hi all,

I'm new here.  I've been a long time Dimarzio user and am having a little difficulty settling on a combination on a current guitar of mine.   I have a Warmoth Strat with a mahogany body and maple '57 Fender reissue strat neck.    I have pickups in there that I like individually but not necessarily on combination with each other:

Neck:  Injector Neck
Middle:  Heavy Blues 2
Bridge: Air Zone

I love the Injector and I love the Air Zone, but am not sure about them together.  The Injector is great by itself and with the Heavy Blues.  But it seems like I have to boost the treble on my amp (Fender Blues Deluxe) for the Injector.... and then it makes the Air Zone in the bridge too bite-y and harsh.   But if I dial back the treble on my amp I lose the definition on the Injector in the neck.

With the Air Zone I like it,  it does get me really close to the EVH/Satriani/Gary Moore brown sound.  I also tried a FRED because I used to have one a long time ago and always really like it.   I've always heard the Tone Zone was really hot and I didn't want that.    It sounded like the Air Zone was a slightly more vintage-y and open air sounding pickup so I went with it.

But it sure seems like it's a balancing act to get it to sound right in my rig.  Like I said, my amp is a Fender Blues Deluxe with EH tubes, and the crunch boxes I use (not at the same time LOL), are a Barber Direct Drive custom mod, and a Barber Dirty Bomb.    Can someone give me some tips, or maybe if the Air Zone *isn't* a good choice for what I want, then maybe an other Dimarzio humbucker?
