The Pickup Place / HSS pickups in a Tele......what pots to use???
« on: July 24, 2019, 12:59:31 PM »
Hi guys, building a Warmoth Tele with HSS pickups. I have a strat pickguard with Area 61/Area 67/PAF 36Th Anniversary and i'll pull the pickups and parts from that pickguard.

I am now confused as to how to allocate the two pots on a Tele instead of 3 on the strat......

And how do i match 250k and 500k pots. I could ignore the tone and just put 500k vol for the bridge hum and 250k Vol for the neck n middle but am concerned that all 3 pickups might get extra bright with no tone pot at all.

How do i solve this ? I order parts tonight and glad that i thought of this!
Looking forward to your wisdom!
Thanks

The Pickup Place / No love for Kinman Humbuckers ??
« on: August 03, 2016, 09:11:56 AM »
Interested in their HSS set with the PAF 59' LPS and Avn69 Single coils.
Any opinions, comparisons ?
They are expensive and seems their noiseless singles and P90's are their top sellers.

btw, the Kinman HSS is up against a Bare Knuckle Crawler/Irish Tour/Irish Tour set, but that will go in a Kinman Harness as well, in a Warmoth Strat build.

Will appreciate your thoughts and opinions.
Thanks

ps: long time Dimarzio user! keeping my Dimz, just looking at some new options as well!

Have read such awesome reviews about Kinman noiseless single coils and their No Solder Harness's, but very little about their full sized humbuckers.

Hey guys,
I'm not happy with the tones i am getting and i am sure i have mismatched components.

I just made a Warmoth Strat, with Walnut body, Satin finish and the neck and fingerboard are all ebony. I know this is a bright instrument to begin with.

So i got Injector Neck/Area 67 Mid/PAF 36th Anniversary Bridge.

The guy who wired my guitar initially got the Bridge and Middle position wrong, there was a huge drop in volume in that position and not the usual quack. U could tell it was a wiring issue.
The guitar has a 500k Vol pot and 2 250k Tone pots. He had wired the tone pots wrong as well and both tones were affecting all pickup positions. So much so that high end was piercing and i had to back off the second tone pot to get normal useable sounds.

In the Neck position i found the Injector almost too tight and not stratty enough. I sounded like a P90 of sorts and took gain well. Neck and Middle were really gorgeous, Middle was great, Middle and Bridge was whacked and the bridge was great too.

Today i had another tech service the guitar and look into the wiring.
By this time i had also ordered a Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2 for neck.
This tech now has one Tone dedicated to Neck and one Tone dedicated to Bridge position.
My 2, 3 and 4 positions although, quacky are very bright and i have to back off the tone of either neck or bridge to compensate. He also reversed the wiring on not just the middle but also the neck pickup to make it all work. I not into soldering and circuitry to understand that, but i can tell if something is right or wrong....

I am finding the VVH Blues 2 a bit more stratty but still nowhere close to the stratty tones i am after; in fact i have heard gorgeous stratty tones from both the Injector and VVH Blues 2 on youtube videos, both clean and shreddy overdriven. Also i seem to have lost some low end chunk, even thought i moved from 9's to 10's today and switched from the Inject neck to VVHB2......strangely even the Bridge lost some low end.

The Dimarzio site has SO many different diagrams for HSS combinations that its confusing.

Add to this that the Hum Cancelling pickups are in fact humbuckers in single coil size which confuses as to which diagrams i should be following.

Can i please get some advice to make sure these pickups are wired correctly. Then if i stlll dont like the tones, i shall keep searching for more pickups!

I have:
Dimarzio Injector Neck or Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2 Neck
Dimarzio Area '67 Middle
Dimarzio PAF 36th Anniversary Bridge.

5 way selector.

1x 500k Pot (vol)
2x 250k Pot (tones)
.47uf 50Volt Capacitors.
.22uf 50Volt Capacitors.
 * where should these capacitors go ??

Can i please know what the most standard wiring for these is going to be as featured on Fender HSS strats with no coil tap or push pull features.

What value pots should i be using, is the 500k making the sound too piercing ?
In Position 2, (neck & middle) are both pickups wired as full humbuckers or are single coils wired from each ? (They are all 4 conductor humbuckers arent they ?)
In Position 4 (Middle and Bridge, is only a single coil of the humbucker wired with the middle or is the full humbucker wired ?
What should be in series and what should be parallel ??

Sigh......even this post is sooo confusing and long!
I hope someone can offer help.

I know these are fine pickups, and shouldn't sound shrill, sterile and small sounding!
Please help, i am very distraught!
Thanks!
Faisal

Thats a great way to describe the Illuminator.
I havent played both to be able to compare, but that description is very attractive!
Cheers!

Right, with the strat set decided, need to change the EMG's on the SE Torero as soon as it arrives!
I had an Ibanez Jem 20 yrs ago. Loved it, but i dint know much about Tone back then.

They seem like great hard rock, heavy metal pickups! Need thickness, tight bass and harmonics galore. Only the neck pickup needs to handle clean tones.
Thinking EVO2/Evo Neck, Illuminator Set, or Transitions Set in that order.
Thought of D-Activators as well but the neck D-Act may be way too bright in that guitar! I like that pickup though, tight and compressed. Perhaps too compressed.
Also, for bizarre mental blocks, i'd like to stick with a matched set :) Dunno why! I just prefer it!

Any suggestions ?

PRS SE TORERO: Floyd Rose, EMG's Mahogany Body, Maple veneer, Maple neck, Ebony Fretboard. And its purple.....so i may go with Purple pickups :)

Cheers
Faisal

Dimarzio tech support has suggested that if output balance cant be sacrificed then only their Vintage Output humbuckers will match well.
They have suggested PAF 36An Bridge/'67/Injector Neck.
I think i'll go with that.
Never really had a vintage output humbucker in the bridge.
Wondering how it'll take hi gain.
But i hear fantastic stuff about these pickups!

How does the Cruiser sound clean and how does it behave under hi gain in the neck position.
And how do you find the neck n middle quack on clean tones ?

Wondering what other Bridge humbuckers will balance well with it other than ATI, Norton and Air Zone. A higher output bridge pickup like D-Sonic might be too hot ??
Cheers

By position 2 i meant neck and middle, some people call it position 4!

I also thought about D-Sonic/Cruiser Bridge/Fast Track 1 , for a more gainy beefy tone. From demos i read, the FT1 still sounds single coilish on clean and takes hi gain wel, and may balance with the higher gain D-Sonic. The Cruiser seems bright enough to get some quack happening.

Thoughts guys ?

The Pickup Place / Bridge n Middle to balance Injector Neck (HSS Strat)
« on: September 13, 2015, 11:04:38 AM »
Time to make my purchase:
Have decided on Injector neck for clean Gilmour type tone and shred.
Need a Middle quacked -- torn between Area '67 and VV '54 Pro. This is mostly for Neck n Middle Quack, read that the '67 can be a bit thin.
Bridge options: Norton, Air Zone and Steve's Special. Need humbucker for hi gain and position 2 clean quack.
Would like the bridge and neck to balance in volume. Harmonics and feedback is a requirement as well.
Please advice! :)
Thanks
