Wow, didn't realize this was a 4 year old thread, not used to those being on the front page.

Carry on, nothing to see here...

Wow, gone a long time and I don't have the So Cal anymore but those are set up to be pretty much drop only, and no, I didn't overtighten the springs, I've been using Floyds since before most of you were born.  No difference between tightening the springs until it rests flat on the body vs using a stopper or block, the tension is the same to offset the string tension, it's a simple physics thing.

The EVH and Music Man Axis guitars are made for drop only too, the bridges rest against the body.

Love Al's stuff, he's been doing videos from home on facebook during the stay at home thing, definitely worth checking out.

And best place to start with his music IMHO is the Elegant Gypsy album, pretty much what Budd posted.

And yes, his technical prowess is amazing.

Hey Ace, heard you had a wild night last night, didn't sound like Dave was too happy with cleanup.

Oh yeah, only 4 years after the OP, and I still have an account both places but I have been pretty much on the SD forum or SSO for the past few years.  Used to visit here quite a bit, but it's been a while.  Budd is a great guy and has done a good job getting this going without any support from DMZ.

If you are looking at the back of the pots, they are wired backwards.  See if this helps:

Since John neither uses middle pickups or single coils, probably not going to matter that much for JP sounds.  I would stick to neck and bridge positions for JP sounds and find a pickup for the middle that can get those in-between strat-ty sounds which is what a middle single does best.

The Super 3 is a great pickup, I actually wasn't sure I would like it based on the description, but I tried one anyway.  Very fun pickup to play, tons of compression and even though it's called a "dark" pickup, harmonics still come through.

The Norton is a great bridge pickup and very versatile, it seems to be criminally overlooked.

The Pickup Place / Re: Best pickups for 7-string ash body guitar.

Sounds like it could be 2 different things going on.

I understand wanting more powerful/warmer pickups, and DMZ has a lot of choices, the Blaze Custom is a good choice, along with 5 or 6 others like the D-Sonic, TZ-7, or even the Air Norton 7 in the bridge with the PAF 7 in the neck.

But, the high overtone thing doesn't sound like it is a pickup issue, sounds more like the string hitting a fret(s) when it is vibrating.  Does it happen every where on the fretboard or is it worse in certain spots?  Does it happen on open striongs?  Do you have your action super low?  Maybe try raising it a hair and see if that helps.

I would have thought he used a JEM on that record, but who am I to argue with the man himself :o

I think the PAF Pros were released with the original JEMs, so it's hard to say what was in the Anderson guitar.  It could be PAF Pros, or maybe prototypes, or it could be Super Distortions.  There was a lot of processing in his sound in those days too, so it will take more than just pickups.

These magnet differences are a very small. By answer to this post I am not agreeing with anything said by anyone about JB's, EVH, AT-1, etc. Just clarifying the magnet talk.

I just tightened the springs until the bridge was against the body, it's still pretty level.

Gear Closet / Re: Compression?
« on: August 26, 2009, 05:37:35 PM »
A dynamics compressor sets a volume ceiling, across the board, for all frequencies.

Technically that is called "limiting", but yes, that is the most transparent way to use a compressor.

I don't use a compressor, but I can't say that all compression is bad (although overused on many of today's recordings).  It's like anything else, moderation is the key.
