What do you play?  Style & amp.

No need for mega pups these days unless you like the EQ curve.  every amp I own will do over-the-top dirt.  Low output usually means greater articulation/definition without going mushy.

I use a small 5 watt Laney Cub 8, which is too loud for home use. I get distortion from either a Rat pedal or a TS9 stacked into a Green Russian Muff clone. I' m mostly into classic rock now.

I´m looking for a clear sounding speaker to brighten up my Laney Cub 8, which is, kind of, warm sounding, and this one seems to fit the bill. Anyone in the forum has any experience with 8 inch speakers that have clarity in overdriven settings?. Thank you.

I am thinking about the exact same combo in one of my axes. To tell you the truth, I have been gravitating more towards lower output humbuckers and single coils (noise cancelling). I don't see the point in hitting the front end of most amps these days as they seem to have enough distortion gain. Glad you are enjoying them.

Thank you. It was sort of an "accident". I purchased the DP103 thinking it was the DP223. I realized this "mistake" when I brought my guitar home, but it was a fortunate one. The DP103 and the DP190 are so sweet and clear. They actually have pretty good sustain, since their magnetic field is weak. And like you said, with tooday´s amps and pedals, the only reason to install high output pups is that you actually like the voice of such pickups.

Hi all,

I was surprised to see that there was no topic for the DP223 and I couldn't resist spouting a little bit about it  :D

Take your standard PAF and add some appropriated 'beef' for the bridge position and that's essentially what you end up with here. It retains the openness and clarity of a PAF (using the DP103 as a reference), yet adds some warmth and punch that isn't to be found in the typical boutique shed-built PAF replica. This pickup has met with mixed reviews, with tone aficionados claiming that it doesn't quite have the singing, rich vintage quality of the more expensive replications. That's true, and that's perhaps why the price is able to be so much lower than those examples.

However, the lack of complete authenticity opens up a different market for this pickup to adapt itself to. For example, I'd like to suggest that this pickup can nail that vintage PAF vibe and feel to 85% - plenty good enough for busting out the Koss, Page, Gibbons, Clapton, Joe Walsh licks, etc. However, that remaining 15% (particularly the added output and warmth) allow it to slip in to the harder rock territory and stay there with considerably more credibility than a typical PAF could manage. Though the bottom end is not as tight as a PAF Pro, its midrange grind gives you powerful, clear and dynamic crunch all over the gain spectrum, with zero feedback or squealing issues.

On top of this adaptability, there is no harshness or mud, and I've got this pickup in a VERY heavy Les Paul chunk-o'-Mahogany, which is of course what this pickup is tailored to. That being said, I also have it wired in Parallel in the neck of an Alder bodied Telecaster - versatility is a plenty in this little bundle of metal and wire.

Though I personally favour the PAF Pro for some things, particularly tighter hard rock rhythms and real screaming leads, the DP223 is my favourite all-round sounding pickup and it's one of the very many reasons that I love that particular Les Paul to death. With some high quality volume and tone pots, the range is unbeatable, and the colour options are just a bonus (nothing is better to me than a pair of cream HBs!) :D

From what I can tell, this and the Norton aren't worlds apart, but I've never played a pickup that sounds quite as interesting as this, considering that it's designed for a specific purpose and to replicate a particular vibe.

Jack

If I get a second guitar, I would definetily try it. I have the DP103 in the bridge position of my PRS SE and I love it. And when I engage my Green Russian Muff clone (boosted with a TS9), it also rocks.

Everything you wanted to know about .... / Re: 36th neck in bridge?
« on: July 20, 2020, 09:37:23 PM »
I have a guitar I though of making a low output guitar. It currently has a 36 bridge and virtual Paf neck. Will a 36 neck go well in the bridge? Match well?
I would put the 36 in something else

I have the 36th anniversary neck (DP103) in the bridge position of my PRS SE. I love it. The DiMarzio website describes as a good pickup for both positions. It pairs well with an Air Classic neck.

Anyone have any insight into this pickup!? Would be much appreciated! ???

A bit late to the post. I have the Air Classic Neck (DP190) paired with tha PAF 36th Anniversary (DP103) in the bridge position. I love them both. The Air Classic neck has a very good sustain in my PRS SE Singlecut. And it´s very clear.

I just dropped them in my PRS SE. Very nice. Very low output, but sweet sounding and dynamic, with a bit of single coil vibe. They seem to like my Green Russian style pedal :)

I held off commenting because it has been a long time since I had the Air Classics. From my recollection, I found the Air Classics fairly underpowered and boring. They did not have much bite and seemed too rounded off. I love the 36th Set in a Les Paul or PRS type guitar. Great set that covers a wide range of tones.

Thanks. In the end, I opted to install an Air Classic Neck humbucker and a PAF 36th Anniversary Bridge pup. I love clarity in the neck position, and something beefier, with more mids, at the bridge. Just personal preference. Eagerly waitng to pickup my guitar and play!.

The Pickup Place / Dimarzio Air Classics vs PAF 36th anniversary sets
« on: June 17, 2020, 05:15:23 PM »
Hi.

I´m interested in these sets for a 25 inch, Korina body and neck (no maple cap), rosewood fingerboard PRS SE Singlecut.

Besides output and midrange emphasis, what are the main differences between these two sets (in terms of brightness/warmthm clarity, string separation, etc.)?.

Which one would give my guitar a "more balanced" tone?.

Thanks.

If you ask me, it's darker then Air Classic and PAF Master. XD

It's darkest of the 3. ;)

Good to konw!. Thanks.

I'm gonna guess it's not high gain Laney. ;)
There is no need for anything hotter then Satriani / Andy Timmons on amp like that. ;)

And if you have like Lionheart 5. PAF would be cool for that amp.
I love that amp. Cool toy. :)
Lionheart would be in my top 5 amps of all time. ;)
I love that amp. ;)

And 36th should be okey for it. ;) If you have amp like that, there is no need for Tone Zone and this high output monsters. XD

PS.

And yeah, just wait someone with more experience to confirm this.
I'm pretty new at kinda, recommending pickups stuff. I don't want someone to spend money on something and later be dissappointed. So for everything, I kinda ask someone to confirm it. ;)
But if you ask me, based on neck pickup needs, I would go with 36th in pair.
And based on amp, there is just no need for high gain. ;)
But I think 36th is the darkest PAF of DiMarzio, so there is no need to get any other. ;)

It´s not a Laney Lionheart, but a Cub 8. Very simple amp. Supposedly it´s Laney´s take on the Fender Champ. It has two inputs (Hi and Lo), and just two knobs: volume and tone. If you want drive, crank the volume knob or push it with an OD pedal; if you want cleanish sounds, roll back the volume knob in the guitar or amp.

It´s good to hear that the 36th is darker, since the amp has am 8" speaker, and it is very bright.
