The Pickup Place / Re: pickup choice to replace emg 81-7

Playing thru the Maxon will cut any 'beef' from any pickup you put into it. Which is actually a good thing, so everything stays nice and tight even when downtuning, as you noticed. Put the beef back with the amp's EQ or with a stompbox graphic EQ in the effects loop as a last resort.

The Pickup Place / Re: Why doesn't AT-1 split well?

Strange that it's so weak compared to the Vintage Bass, something's off. Wasn't the general consensus that the AT-1 is better in parallel than split anyway? I really need to try one ASAP.

Neither of them is fatter than the PAF Pro. Breed neck maybe? GS neck sounds great from what I've heard.

Please do post a review, both marc and jazzfromhell. I'm especially interested in how close the Satch Track can get to a true singlecoil tone when in parallel. It's sort of a given that a slightly leaner Chopper will sound great in series for fat neck stuff, but there's been zero feedback so far on the other wiring options.

I have the stock PAF Pro in the neck of my JS-1, and IMO it's good but not excellent at the 'lean bass and great at harmonics' thing. Not a bad choice (the PP almost never is), but not ideal either.

D-Activator neck or Full Shred.

Try Chopper in the bridge and Fast Track 1 in the neck, keep the original 250k pots and the original central single, have the circuit split the right coil in the 2 and 4 positions so they remain humcancelling.

The Pickup Place / Re: Neck Humbucker trick for removing mud/boom

Thanks, Ray! The Screamin' Demon is another pickup that works great in the neck (for brighter guitars than LPs maybe), and it's got two rows of different screws.  The real pandora's box would be with dimarzios, with the different coils in the same pickup, flipping, removing the screws on a side that's half-aired or not, etc. So many possibilities.

I checked before posting, and they have basically nothing for a fender style 5-way, certainly nothing in the 'cool' or 'clever' category.

Any cool wiring tricks for two pickup guitars with the 'normal' 5-way? I've never seen any in-depth discussion on that.

Sounds like Norton, but this is the perfect question for DiMarzio's own tech line, as they know exactly what goes on in their designs as far as frequency response and stuff. Let us know if you ask them!

Sorry, in my post I made it sound like I grinded down the pickup poles. NO (obviously). You grind out the inside of the pole holes on the P90 cover. I'll edit that to clarify.

It was clear enough you were referring to the plastic cover :)

Uh, interesting! How does it work after the dremeling? Foam under the whole assembly and the two mounting screws keep the whole thing together? Seems a bit fragile or squeal-prone ...
