The difference in tone is not that big actually.And in a band situation i dont hear much difference. However,it is a very solid way to direct mount pickups in a guitar + you dont destroy the thread in the pickups either wich is good if you want to replace and sell old pickups.
I have two Kiesel guitars that has Dimarzio AT-1 and Bluesbuckers + The PMS system and it works and looks great.
Very expensive though.

I use PMS mounting system on my guitars.  Expensive but worth it to me!

I have the AT-1 in the bridge and a Bluesbucker in the neck on my Kiesel 24 fret and it’s a perfekt match!

I think you should do fine with the AT-1 and Heavy blues 2 in the neck. Andy Timmons uses Cruiser bridge (that are a bit lower in output than the Heavy blues 2)in the neck and middle position and it seems to work for him.
Love my AT-1!
