Hey guys, been away from this board for awhile but I'm coming back with a burning question (see topic title).
I've joined a Maiden tribute band ('80-'88) just for fun and I'm doing Adrian. A SD in the bridge is a given and I'd like a nice neck pickup to go with it. The catch: I have the PAF Pro and the Super 2 in other guitars and they obviously work great for this. However I'd like to try a Dimarzio I've never used before. I like the output/"gain feel" to be the same when I switch between pickups so I'm thinking Evo Neck. Am I way off? Is there something else I should try? I haven't been keeping up with the latest developments.

For me means i am here because I am asking the same questions. Mostly use Duncans and spend time on that forum. The Duncan 59/Custom Hybrid and a Sentient will get you there easily looking into Dimarzio. Bought a REALLY nice Carvin ST 300 with Crunch Lab/ Liquifier set in it  a while back. HATED the Crunch lab for anything but full on heavy stuff just would not clean up and open up with touch like I wanted it it so swapped it for a Gravity Storm. Like the Gravity Storm but just can't get the Liquifire  to work for me. To dark and muddy full on and is really lifeless split. So I am also looking for a neck pickup this time.
The Gravity Storm bridge would get you close have no clue on a Dimarzio neck though.
Have 2 with the 59/Custom Sentient Duncan sets and can cover anything from modern metal to really shockingly good country run togtether with a 3 way and a pair of taps.
 What I need is a clear articulate big but not muddy neck pickup that splits well to go with the big open warm A5 Gravity Storm Bridge in the ST 300 to do the same.

Saw your posts in my other thread as well. I've been googling a lot these last few weeks and for my guitar that has the '59 (n) / Custom 5 (b) combo I've settled on replacing the C5 with a JB. At least it won't get lost in the mix.

In my other guitar that needs to be extremely versatile, an alder Charvel DK24 2PT that originally came with Alnico 2 Pro (n) / Full Shred, funnily enough I've decided to replace the FS with the 59/Custom Hybrid. It sounds like an awesome pickup. Can't wait to try it.

Of course, I realize there's no one answer. Just wondering what people use if they have a guitar that "does it all". Not talking all the way from clean jazz to djent; more pop, hard/rock, blues, funk, soul.

Im really looking for a bridge pickup and a neck pickup that can pull off great cleans as well as distorted sounds. Not death metal distorted, but up to say, Van Halen.

I really like the Duncan Custom 5 and the 59 so I might go with them but I'm curious about if DMZ has similar pickups.

Hey guys!
I'm wondering which you consider to be the 2 pickups (neck and bridge) that has the nicest clean AND dirty sounds in the Dimarzio lineup, ie if you both want to play EVH riffs with maximum authority and get the most beautiful clean sounds possible, and also great split sounds. The perfect pair. What would it be?

Well, it's not gonna get more Yngwie-sounding than the HS-3, HS-4 and the Furys since that is what he actually used/uses. He also used the FS-1 back in the Alcatrazz days. Maybe give that one a try.

I've got a swamp ash 24-fret Solar guitar with a maple neck and a Floyd. The neck is a Duncan 59 with I really like but the C5 in the bridge is a bit too scooped in the mids for my taste. Is there a HB (SD, DiMarzio or other) which is close to the C5 in output and feel but with a tad more mids?

It's been a long time since I played a JB so I'm thinking about if that would be a good fit as well as my old DiMarzio favorites Transition (too hot?) and Tone Zone (too much?).

What say yee?

To the OP:

I had the Norton in an Ibanez RG550 and I agree that its a bit thin and bright in basswood. I'd suggest you try the Transition which I have in a couple guitars now. It's everything I wanted the Norton to be but wasn't. Cleans up pretty well and roars and punches when you turn up the gain. It can handle pretty much anything style-wise and it will balance well with your other pickups.

Another one you could try is the Virtual Hot PAF. It pops up used quite often on ebay etc. It's slightly lower in output if you look at the numbers but it doesnt really feel that was under your fingers and it will balance perfectly with the SSL and PAF Joe. I'm not the only one who'd love to see DiMarzio bring that one back.

I think you just need to pull the trigger on something and try it in your own rig. If you buy new, you can use the exchange program to swap it if you don’t like it.

I believe the exchange program only applies if you're in the US, correct?

I have to second the Custom 5 suggestion. I have it paired with a 59 I'm a swamp ash guitar and it sounds really great, I love that combo. Super versatile.

Of course you should try it! I wouldve never in a million years thought of putting a Tone Zone in the neck until I heard that both Michael Romeo and Paul Gilbert did it. Turns out it works great. Just go for it.

I'd wager to say that the Chopper will be a way WAY better fit in the neck than the SD-S. Even better than the Chopper is the Satch Track, it's the best railbucker I've ever heard and I've tried all of em.
