The Pickup Place / Re: Al Di Meola (DP202) bridge...
« on: February 13, 2019, 09:56:29 AM »
The Dimarzio AL DIMEOLA set is one that i have always wanted to try but never got around to. :P
From everything i read and heard about them they sound like a great p'u set for my tastes.
One question about the bridge model, i read one guy say it is like a more bass heavy PAF pro or can be considered a Tone zone light?
I love the PAF pro in both positions but wish it had a little more low end sometimes. and the TZ is a great p'u but is a bit too compressed.
So maybe the ADM would be perfect?

That is definitely a official LF'er BUT what the hell is up with the condition of that baseplate?
I do not understand how the bottom of a p'u could get into the condition?
there is even a blob of solder on it? ???

The Pickup Place / Re: Has anyone swapped magnets in a super distortion?

I have often wondered about this because i've been looking at trying it to lower the output in them but the magnet size/shape isn't typical. But i was wondering if anyone has found a alnico that is the same size and tried it, and if so what did you hear?
I have put a alnico 8 in one of my Super D's and loved the tone.

Where is it said that he used only that particular Andersen for the whole record?

ON VAI.com where steve himself said it, that's where ;)

The Pickup Place / Re: Dominion Neck in bridge?

Actually it is the BREED neck that is the "fatter PAF pro" and it sounds incredible in the bridge
A lot like a PAF pro but warmer, bigger but at the expense of sonic clarity and definition.
the dominion  neck is ceramic and will be tighter and brighter, i have not tried it though.

I second the HFH with a 250K pot or the bluesbucker

I really like his tone on this record!  Much more than his later tones :)
it has that PAF pro tightness and clarity?
anyone know for sure?
This is the guitar he used for that record and they are dimarzio's and have black hex poles.

picked up a MegaDrive not long ago on a suggestion from someone that played them almost exclusively for years.

did a review on it here:  http://darthphineas.com/2015/11/dimarzio-megadrive-dp107/
I used one of these after finding out Tony mac used it on Maximum security and project driver
It is a really good balanced pu, and FWIW it is similar(dimarzio says too close ) Tonally  to the STEVE's special' model. So they starting offering it as a custom order only like you said.
I own the Steve's special as well and while it does have some similar traits in tone i felt the megadrive
was overall more Juicy, chewy and had more character.
The megadrive is better for post mountain tones for the Old leslie west mountain tone i would go dimarzio Bluesbucker http://www.dimarzio.com/pickups/humbuckers/bluesbucker
or the dean "mountain of tone"
He used a P-90 back then and both of those are based on a P-90 8)

I bought a brand new DMT "Mountain of tone" and it has " Thee" leslie west tone in spades.
Not my cup if tea but for that tone it is the goods.
Bubs_42 i sent you a PM 8)

not really a big fan of those Seymour Duncan '59s. A bit too mid scooped for my tastes...
thats why they made my list but i fixed that by swapping the magnet out for a roughcast A5 or a A2)

12
take the duncan 59 off my un impressed  list, with a magnet swap(roughcast A5 or a regular A2)  it is so much better. brought back the missing mids
Plus i would like to add i prefer the older duncans(MJ ones) to the newer made one?
add to the list of not impressed the crowd pleasers by guitar force.
I sold these a day later!  all hype!

there really s no production dimarzios that are dead on to these, closest is AT-1 in the bridge and a air norton or liquifire in the neck.

That's interesting, as that's what I put in my EBMM Axis to replace them with. AT-1 bridge and LF neck.

Sent from my armored space station using Tapatalk on iPad

what differences do you hear between the two sets?

14
the axis bridge model is 17.3K, uses a alnico 5 magnet and is wound with awg44(poly)
I heard this pu is two screw coils of a tone zone.
the tone zone has two different coils and that what makes it different from the axis which has two exact matching coils.
the axis neck pu is 15K has a alinco 5 magnet and is a airbucker.
it is essentially a hotter wound air norton.

best thing to do is get a set from Ebay or i have a set i would sell.

My answer is.. sell me the Axis pickups and get an AT-1 which has a bit more sparkle and less of the mids/bass the axis pickusp do(at least to me).

 ;D  good one budd! ;D

I honestly think the AT-1 has less presence/sparkle than the axis bridge pu. at least in stock form.
if you re after a more medium output pu with better sparkle the PAF pro is the one.
ironically enough it is a "lighter" sounding version of the axis bridge pu you have now.
both are based on a paf but tweaked for more output and a extended eq.
