Might be a bit too warm, depending on the guitar itself. For 80's I'd suggest the Norton myself.

According to the site I pulled the diagram from it doesn't alter the full humbucker tone.
They state to use DMZ wiring colors in their diagrams.

Basically the wiring in the above image selects the other coil when split.

Set up the amp using the neck humbucker. Woofyness gone.
This might introduce another little point of interest though.

Put a Göldo Backbox in my SoCal. (Same one as Speeddemon's.)
Set it up so it lets the D-tuner do it's job, but.... When pulling back on the trem
arm, with a little bit more strength then usual, I can still do some upward bends.
Range of upward bends is offcourse limited due to the trem being non recessed.
