The Pickup Place / Re: Humbucker similar to HS-2 in split mode

Trying to get the same tone from a humbucker is going to be tough. Your best bet might be one of the more single coil sounding humbuckers but I still don't think it'll get near to what you want.

If you're just looking for more output, have you considered just using a clean boost pedal?

It's not so much the output, really what I like about the HS-2 that I'd like in a humbucker is the kinda vocal quality it has in terms of how it responds to dynamics, and the harmonics it gets, which granted, I know will change from rig to rig. I'm not sure if "bright" is necessarily the correct word, it's more of a "honky." Right now my rig contains mostly SSS Strats, one has an HS-2, one has the Eric Johnson signature pickups, and another has SD Antiquities, but when I switch to my Les Paul that has Super Distortions, the contrast is almost so much that I have to EQ my rig, so I'd like something that rocks, has decent harmonics, but not as hot as the Super Distortions. I know there's a lot of Dimarzio territory between those points, but I'm not even sure where to start.

The Pickup Place / Humbucker similar to HS-2 in split mode
« on: March 09, 2021, 02:47:57 PM »
Hello! I was hoping to seek out some advice in regards to a pickup suggestion. I'm doing a superstrat build, and it's routed for two humbuckers. I have a Mexican Strat that has an HS-2 wired in split mode only, a la Eric Johnson, and I'm digging that sound. I was wondering if anyone would have a suggestion for a humbucker that would get me in the same ballpark in terms of tone, output, and dynamics. I couldn't find much in terms of metrics for the HS-2 ran in split mode. Bonus points for suggestions as to what would pair well in the neck position. Thanks everyone.
