I have it permanently wired split. With a stacked PUP, split is LOUDER than humbucking. It is bright and chimey, just what you need in that position.

Can't comment on the Virtual Vintage, but I never liked  the middle pickup on it's own either. Then I read about Eris Johnson using a HS-2 wired for only one coil, and tried it in that position. It's superb. I'm a middle-on-its-own convert.

The Airzone is a great pickup. Incidentally, it sounds better split (authentic GOOD single coil sound) than just about any other pickup.
It's got a lot of bottom end. I would recommend 500K pot with it.

Area.  Easy.  HS-2s do not sound like real singles and the output is anemic; it's early 80s technology vs. current millennia. 

Also, no need to wire Areas to split, unless you have another pickup that is RW/RP and need to cancel hum (like splitting a bridge humbucker).  All you do when you split an Area is add noise.

I assume Ray is talking about HS-2 in humbucking mode. As a single coil, it sounds beautiful. Crisp and chimey. Plenty of power, reads 8:00 DC resistance. Hum from mine is not an issue.
I love the fact they're old technology. You can by 2nd hand ones dirt cheap on Ebay.

If you go with the HS-2, make sure you wire it with a switch for the top coil only option. Or wire it permanently in that mode, as I have. It will actually be louder that way. It's the best single coil sound I've ever used, and I've used quite a few.

Not a rail type, but a Dimarzio HS-2, wired for just the top coil, will give you one of the best glassy old Fender sounds around. I have one in the middle position of my HSH Tele. Superb.
Eric Johnson used to use them wired this way. Reads about 8.0k, plenty of output. You can often pick them up cheap secondhand.

My AT-1 isn't all that weak when split, I'd just been spoiled by the AirZone. Sounds like you do have a faulty pickup, if the wiring isn't the problem

I've tried the AT-1 split. While I didn't think the sound sucked, it was the main reason I went back to an AirZone. Man, that thing splits better than anything I've tried.

jerryjg, if you could give as much info as possible about the Satch Track, it would be greatly appreciated.
I'm particularly interested in comparing it to a Pro Track, if you've had one of them in the neck.

Worries me a bit, as I don't like the Chopper much.
Is the Satch still "Paf-ish"? 
From the descriptions on the Dimarzio site, it would seem very close to the Protrack, just a little less bass, a little more bite. I would like that, but is that the only difference? Does it retain some of that thick  humbucker quality?

Killer neck pickup. My favorite of all the DiMarzio railbuckers.

Jazzfromhell, would love a detailed assessment of this PUP. As noted by others, there's so little info/comment available.
Particularly, how does it differ or is better than, the Protrack? I installed a Protrack a little while back. I was tempted to try the Satch, but there just wasn't enough info about it.
I like the Pro, but wonder whether I made the right choice. Particularly, I'd like just a tiny bit more edge to the tone, while still keeping the  humbucker-like fatness.

wire the PUP directly to a jack plug and plug it in. If problem, its a bad PUP. If no problem, it's your wiring, switch or pots.
Check it out one component at a time.
