The Pickup Place / Pro Track or Air Norton S....
« on: February 27, 2016, 12:26:09 PM »
I'm replacing the neck single coil in my HSS Strat and would like to know the differences between these two pickups.  I would like a nice airy, warm pickup with a good PAF vibe but will really sustain.  I need something with a great warm, clean tone; and will sound great under gain.  If I were to go by the DiMarzio site alone, I would probably chose the Air Norton S.

What are your thoughts?

So, if I had a Telecaster, and I wanted to put a humbucker in the neck position, and keep the 250k pots, the Bluesbucker might be the answer?  I have just that; a Telecaster with a Strat pickup in the middle position.  I want to install a humbucker in the neck position, but in my experience, humbuckers with 250k pots tend to be too dark; while single coils with 500k pots, tend to be too bright.

I could get a Tone Shaper from Acme, but I think a Bluesbucker would fit the bill and be cheaper.

I wanted to give my opinion of the Norton.  My Norton isn't store-bought.  It's an Un-aired Air Norton; which makes it a Norton.  I can see why folks who like the Duncan JB, love the Norton.  Where the JB has a harsher upper-mid tone, the Norton's is smoother.  It really has that cool 80's tone but is still relevant.  Under gain, notes are still articulate and clear.  The tone is warmer and beefy; but not a huge wall of sound like my Air Zone was.  Clean, it's got a cool sharpness to the tone, but it's still got a sweetness that sustains very nicely.  Now, I use my Norton in my Strat.  So, we have an alder body and maple neck/fretboard.  I use the stock 250k pots with the Norton only connected to the volume pot.

Very nice video.  Thanks for sharing.  I'm just now getting back into vintage trems.  After playing mostly Teles and Strats with the trems tightened all the way down and the bar thrown out, I now have confidence to actually use my Strat's trem and also make it float.

I adjusted the claw and it actually did what Carl's Strat does.  It stayed in tune.  I know of another player doing this with no success.  Also, I know Carl uses 9's as a string gauge.  I use 10's.  We'll see what happens....

I just installed an Area T in the bridge position of my American Series Telecaster.  So far, I like it.  We shall se how it fares....

I just installed a pair of VV 54 Pros in the neck and middle position of my Telecaster.  So far, I like them.  We will see how they fare...

imho seymour'd be too pretentious to do so.

I disagree.  I know Seymour.  He's just a guy trying to make a living doing the same thing that Larry DiMarzio is doing.  That said, Larry DiMarzio is just trying to make a living himself.  Both are excellent pickup makers.  There are others out there too, who have very negative opinions of both Mr. Duncan and Mr. DiMarzio.  Bill Lawrence is one of them and so is Joe Barden.  Bill Lawrence has been quoted as almost ridiculing some of Seymour's ideas.
