Title: Neck pickup to pair with Super Distortion bridge
Post by: Random on June 11, 2017, 04:59:58 PM
Hi- New here, long time SD & X2N user. Looking for a good mate for my SD bridge in an Epi Les Paul Tribute. I play rock, more on the Wino end of things. Looking for something to clear up the muffled bass I am getting with the stock Gibson 57 Classic (with a .015uf tone cap which helped, but not enough) on this guitar. Looking for rocking and slutty rather than anything clinical or modern, I actually had to look up 'djent' recently! I am a total cro magnon player, I will never, ever shred! What do you all like for this? I could care less about 'vintage' or any of that! Thank you!

Super 2. Its made specifically to pair with an SD in the bridge, and it's the antithesis of muddy. Bright and clear with a good amount of power.

Nothing better for that than the Super 2.

I am not much of help with your pickup choice question but I like that quote. It definitely is going to save you money by not falling for vintage marketing hype.

Cheers Stephan

Paf pro. I have a super in the bridge of my les paul and a paf pro in the neck. Perfect combo imo for any rock/metal styles

one of my favorite combo, old square tab PAF and Super Distortion.
for modern recent production, I use 36th PAF for the neck. very nice pickup.

OK, PAF Pro is in place and is fantastic. It's actually overshadowing the distortion quite a bit! May have to look at replacing the SD with something a bit more 'open' sounding! Bloody vicious circle, the pickup game is!

You would need something hotter like the Tone Zone to keep up with the Paf Pro neck, and the Tone Zone is crap in a Les Paul. You would be better off replacing the Paf Pro with a Super 2 in the neck. If you want to stick with the Paf Pro, I would try the Air Zone or Breed Bridge with it.

Update on this: Finally got the Dominion bridge in from Dimarzio (swapped the SD), and damn, it and the PAF Pro in the neck are a fantastic set. Dominion bridge is hot, but not crazy, and just sounds fantastic does great crunch and a surprisingly sweet singing lead with the tone dialed back. Really impressed with this as a not-bright bridge pickup, and the mid position blends are great along a wide range. The out of phase is great with these two, as well. Totally happy with this set up.
